Evaluating the Learning Experiences of Quantity Surveying Undergraduates in the Built Environment in Selected Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

Abstract

Given the growing emphasis on student-centered learning and quality education, this study examined the learning experiences of built environment undergraduates in Nigerian tertiary institutions, particularly Quantity surveying students, focusing on the quality of learning and its impact on career intentions. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 174 final year students (ND II, HND II and 500 level) in the 2024/2025 academic session across 3 polytechnics and 2 universities via an online Google Form questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 23). The findings indicated that students’ experience in 27 out of 35 factors considered were perceived to be good, while the remaining 8 were fair. The results of the t-test revealed no statistically significant difference in the experience of polytechnics and universities undergraduates for 25 out of 35 factors. The findings further indicated no statistically significant difference in polytechnics and universities undergraduates’ willingness to recommend quantity surveying programme to others, their likelihood of choosing quantity surveying as a career after graduation and plans to further education or training in quantity surveying. This research will be helpful for academic staff and tertiary institution management to formulate strategies aimed at improving the quality of learning
